| | I just worked on Labor Day for the first time in Thirty Years. Yes that's right.
It is apparent to me that there are a lot of people (an appalling number of people) who just don't understand the importance of this day. Or they don't think it applies to them. Or they don't care. I prefer to think that they don't understand.
The gist of it is, this is not a patriotic holiday. This is not a religious holiday. This is a humanistic holiday. This day is for the ordinary people who sacrificed so that You, and I, and Them, can get paid a decent wage. So that You, and I, and Them, have a set limit to the number of hours we can work in a day.
These Thirty years, it has pissed me off that anyone has to work on Labor Day. I avoid shopping on Labor Day because I don't want to say to the corporate office that it's okay to keep the Supermarket open on a holiday. I don't want to say to the corporate office of the department store that I want them to have a big sale on the holiday. Because I want that clerk to go home and have dinner with the family instead. I mean, if you can't plan your shopping around one day in a month then what the fuck is wrong with that picture?
So. I implore you. Take out your calenders. find the holidays that are meaningful to you. Circle the date and take the day off if it's not one of the 5 days a year that your business is closed. And by all means, do your shopping the day before.
out.
